President’s Message February 2024
These unseasonably warm winter months look a lot different than this time last year. Beargrease was canceled, ice is rapidly melting on the lakes, but all this doesn’t stop us from continuing to explore in ham radio. Winter Field Day was 37 degrees and the only snow in sight was a 3” high by 1’ wide snowbank holding on as best as it could. These warm conditions really made everything easier as far as setup and operating all day. Operating as two clubs, K0LTC and K0CBP, we made many contacts and had a wonderful time. I encourage more of you to show up next year. Thanks to Chris and Aaron for coordinating the efforts for both clubs. The more we activate and use the shack the better it is.

Looking ahead to February our Tech Class starts on Monday February 5th. If you know someone who wants to get their license, we can help! Send them to k0ltc.org/tech_license_class. As mentioned in the last meeting, we need more volunteers to help teach. As much as we want Gordy to continue the excellent job he has been doing, it’s come time to pass on those responsibilities. I know we have a very smart and capable group of teaching and mentoring new hams. If you can spare even a night, it makes a huge difference both in passing on what you know and continuing to expand the hobby on to more people. Our classes reach across the US. To be able to offer them is something we as a club should continue to prioritize and take pride in. Please reach out to myself or Benton and sign up for a week. Content is already prepared - you only need to be able to read out loud. Even if it's one or two sessions we really need the help to continue to offer these valuable classes.

Viewed from the East End I had the opportunity to set up and operate the East End Net Control radio station for the 2023 Antique Car Run. It’s fun being part of the communications team for this event. Following the action throughout the day, providing net control services to the ham operators “on the road”, and relaying information to interested parties at the finish area in New Brighten makes for a full day of radio. I can’t wait to be part of this event again! Pictured is Roman K0RIZ , MGRC’S coordinator for the event, stopping by in the afternoon to help with net control duties. Thanks to all MGRC members for a job well done. 73…. Phil Peterson kc0oid

The First Amateur Radio Station on the Moon, JS1YMG, is Now Transmitting
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully landed their Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) on January 19, 2024. Just before touchdown, SLIM released two small lunar surface probes, LEV-1 and LEV-2.
LEV-2 collects data while moving on the lunar surface, and LEV-1 receives the data.
The JAXA Ham Radio Club (JHRC), JQ1ZVI, secured amateur radio license JS1YMG for LEV-1, which has been transmitting Morse code on 437.41 MHz since January 19. The probe uses a 1 W UHF antenna with circular polarization and is transmitting "matters related to amateur business."
Radio amateurs have been busy analyzing JS1YMG's signal, with Daniel Estévez's, EA4GPZ, blog introducing the method and extraction results for demodulating Morse code from the signal, as well as extracting the code string.
It's unclear how long signals will be heard. JAXA has said that SLIM was not designed to survive a lunar night, which lasts about 14 days, and is due to return in a few days.
SLIM was launched on September 6, 2023, and landed on January 19, 2024, with the mission of analyzing the composition of rocks to aid research about the origin of the moon. SLIM's landing made Japan the fifth country to achieve a soft touchdown on the moon. The landing was achieved with exceptional precision -- within 180 feet of its targeted touchdown location.
