MGRC Mission Statement

Maple Grove Radio Club provides education to current and future amateur radio operators, with the goal of serving the public. We are a reliable communications resource for events and emergencies in Maple Grove and surrounding communities.

Who doesn't like a murder mystery which uses ham radio to communicate through time? You can check this B movie out from the Hennepin County Library.

President's Message

Happy Halloween! I hope everyone had a great close to the fall season with a little bit of snow to wrap it up. We had a busy month with all of our events. I want to start off by thanking everyone for their volunteer efforts with the marathon, and a special mention to Stephen (KF0AED) for his work on coordinating everyone. I also hope you had a good time at the Amateur Radio Convention and walked away with more information or something new to research.

We are also that much closer to getting our HF antenna back on the air, Aaron Lewis, W0ADL, has done a great job with that and getting a crane to help get our new mast up. Keep an eye out for a call to help with the final few pieces.

The amplifier is also up and running in the shack so once the HF antenna is up you will need to talk with Tim Airmond to get a lesson on using it. Tim and Gordon tested it and it’s ready to rock. We just want to make sure everyone is safe and we protect the operators and equipment before it’s use.

The last big thing to talk about is the American Legion possible relocation. At this time there is talk on relocating the American Legion. Right now nothing is set in stone and I will of course keep the club in the loop if/as things develop. We are still planning on TALARC and MGRC and the American Legion partnership and hope to continue having a place for our shack and meetings.

I hope to see you all at the next club meeting this week!

73,

Zach Whitney

Interesting Media

ARES Task Book Updates
In this companion video to On the Air magazine. Josh Johnston, KE5MHV talks about where the ARES task book fits in the hobby and service. He also explains exactly what has been upated.
How to get young people into ham radio
I normally wouldn't include a live stream as interesting media but in this video Steve Goodgame K5ATA talks about how the teachers institute works, his plans for the future. He also talks about how he plans on getting ham radio in the classroom.
I happened upon this video researching what could be done to discover RFI in the house. This really cool Carlson Super Probe makes it easy. In the video he shares the schematic. Would love to make one in a lab class. Here is an instruct able link with pictures.
While trying to increase my knowledge of RFI remedies I learned that not only do you have to keep RFI issues in your antenna system but also may need to remedy the RFI that is possible in the power system. There also is a blog post about cleaning up RFI in the shack by the designer.

ARRL NEWS

Handbook 101: A New Generation of Amateur Radio

The ARRL Handbook is your complete guide to wireless technology, experimentation, practice, and development – capturing the state of radio science and technology in one authoritative work for nearly 100 years. Use its more than 1,200 pages of amateur radio know-how to delve into radio electronics, circuit design, digital modulation techniques, and equipment construction.

The 101st edition proudly introduces a new editor, Gregory D. Lapin, Ph.D., PE, N9GL. Greg and his team of subject matter experts in the community bring a fresh perspective and new outlook on the future of amateur radio. They have revised entire chapters on radio fundamentals, transmission lines, general safety, assembling a station, and more. Major updates to Handbook 101 include:

  • Information on electromagnetic analysis and inexpensive tools for modeling circuits, antennas, and propagation.

  • New material on higher-level modeling of transmitters and receivers.

  • A new section on preparing your station for emergency operations.

  • Radio astronomy receiver and antenna design information.

  • A new section on batteries and battery safety.

  • A new section on NEC4 and the antenna modeling software built on it.

  • New material on SWR meters and related tests.

  • The latest on RF safety and compliance with FCC exposure regulations.

Handbook 101 comes with a bonus e-Book download. The download contains a wealth of online content and includes the fully searchable digital edition of the printed book, plus expanded supplemental content, software, PC board templates, and other support files.

Whether you’re an experienced ham or new to the hobby, you’ll find information you can use in The ARRL Handbook. Like Handbook editor Gregory Lapin, N9GL, said about the first Handbook he owned, “That edition was half the size of the current Handbook and I was never able to read it from cover to cover. I have had many editions since then and … have never read every word in [it] until this year. Regardless, it has always been one of the great references on my bookshelf; I refer to it often… I hope you enjoy the 101st edition and gain lots of knowledge to help our hobby continue moving forward into the next century and beyond.”
